Thoughts on Penofin vs Cutek for initial oiling?

I've been using Penofin Hardwood Formula for years and never had complaints, but a couple guys I trust keep telling me Cutek Extreme is the way to go now.

Anyone made the switch? Specifically interested in:

  • Ease of application on fresh Ipe
  • Longevity before recoat
  • Color options (my clients love that warm honey tone)

I'm doing about 15-20 deck projects a year so switching products is a big decision for me.

I've used both extensively. Penofin gives a slightly warmer initial tone but Cutek holds up better long-term IMO. The CD50 additive for Cutek is a game changer for UV protection.

Made the switch to Cutek Extreme about 18 months ago and haven't looked back. Application is easier — it's thinner so it penetrates faster on fresh Ipe. I usually get 12-14 months before needing a recoat vs about 10 with Penofin.

I tested both side by side on scrap boards last summer. After 8 months of full sun exposure in Texas, the Cutek side looked noticeably better. That sold me.

One thing to watch with Cutek — make sure the wood is bone dry before applying. Had one job where I applied too soon after rain and got blotchy spots. Penofin is more forgiving on slightly damp wood.

Cutek all the way for me. Their color range is better too — the 'Sela' tone gets that warm honey look your clients want. And it doesn't leave that tacky surface feel when it's freshly applied.
