Process
How It Works
A clear, structured path from registration to certification.
Register
Create your free EHCI account. No upfront payment or commitment is required to get started. Choose your certification pathway based on your experience level and professional goals — whether you're beginning with the Level 1 Core Fundamentals or targeting a specific species or application specialization.
Learn
Access structured, self-paced learning modules written by experienced field practitioners and material scientists. Each module covers real-world installation science, species-specific properties, fastener systems, finishing techniques, and best practices. Study on your own schedule from any device.
Pretest
Before attempting the official exam, take a practice assessment to identify knowledge gaps. The pretest mirrors the format and difficulty of the real exam, helping you focus your study time on the areas that matter most for your certification level.
Exam
Complete the official timed, category-weighted certification examination. Questions are drawn from randomized pools, so no two exams are identical. You must demonstrate competence across all module categories to pass. Results are available immediately upon completion.
Credential
Upon passing, receive your official EHCI credential with a unique Certificate ID and a verifiable digital badge. The badge can be embedded on your website, added to your email signature, and included in proposals — each linking to real-time verification of your active status.
Directory
Opt into the EHCI Certified Professional Directory to gain visibility with homeowners, architects, general contractors, and specifiers searching for qualified exterior hardwood installers in your area. Your listing includes credentials, specializations, location, and a verification link.

Timed Exams
Each exam has a set time limit designed to simulate real-world decision-making pressure. You'll need to manage your time across all knowledge categories — from wood science and moisture dynamics to species properties and fastener systems.
Weighted Scoring
Questions are weighted by category importance and difficulty level. Critical safety and structural knowledge carries more weight than general trivia, ensuring your credential reflects genuine field-relevant competence.
7-Day Cooldown
A mandatory 7-day waiting period applies between consecutive exam attempts for the same certification. This prevents rote memorization and ensures candidates genuinely study the material before reattempting.
No Answer Reveal
Correct answers are never shown after any exam attempt. This is essential to maintaining long-term exam security and ensuring every candidate is evaluated fairly against the same protected question bank.
Why EHCI's Process Is Different
Most industry training programs are run by manufacturers or trade associations with a financial interest in selling products. EHCI is different. We are an independent certification body with no affiliation to any single manufacturer, product line, or distributor. Our standards are developed by experienced field practitioners, material scientists, and structural engineers — not marketing departments.
The EHCI certification process is designed for working professionals. All coursework is self-paced and accessible online from any device, so you can study between jobs, in the evening, or on weekends. There's no classroom requirement, no travel, and no mandatory schedule. You study when it works for you, and you take the exam when you're ready.
Upon certification, you receive more than a certificate. You get a verifiable digital badge you can embed on your website, a listing in the EHCI professional directory visible to homeowners and specifiers, and a unique Certificate ID that anyone can use to confirm your credentials in real time. Your certification is a living professional asset — not a piece of paper in a drawer.
