Showcase: Tigerwood accent wall + bench in a courtyard remodel — Phoenix

M
Marcus Webb

Something a little different — used leftover Tigerwood decking as a vertical accent wall and a floating bench in a courtyard remodel. Ripped boards to 3-1/2", eased the edges, open 3/8" reveals, all on a concealed cleat system. The striping on Tigerwood reads amazing vertically. Sealed with a UV-blocking penetrating oil since Phoenix sun is brutal. Photos in my profile.

Vertical Tigerwood is so underused. Nice call on the UV oil — without it those stripes bleach to mud in a Phoenix summer.

How did you handle end grain on the bench edges? That's always where my vertical work drinks water and checks first.

Nice work, that grain pop is killer. I’ve found that using an Ipe-Seal or similar end-grain sealer is a non-negotiable for those vertical reveals in AZ, otherwise the checking will start within the first season. Did you use a rainscreen mesh behind the sleepers for airflow, or are you mounting directly to the substrate? I usually worry about moisture trapped behind those concealed cleats in a courtyard setting if there's any irrigation nearby. Really solid choice on ripping those down to 3-1/2", it gives the wall a much cleaner, rhythmic scale than full-width decking boards.
