Anyone else noticing brittle edges on recent Tigerwood shipments?

Just wrapped up a 300sqft install using 1x6 Tigerwood and I am tearing my hair out. The stock arrived looking clean, but as soon as we hit it with the router for the edge profile, the grain started flaking off in chunks. We are running fresh carbide bits, so it is definitely the material. It seems way more brittle than the last lift I grabbed in Q3. I ended up having to waste nearly 15% of the footage just to avoid the worst sections. Has anyone else noticed this inconsistency lately, or did I just get a dud pallet from the yard? Curious if it is worth switching suppliers before my next big job in Palm Beach, where that humidity really makes the board movement unpredictable once it is installed.

Man, I’ve been feeling that pain too. I had a similar issue on a deck in Boca last month with some recent Tigerwood stock. It’s definitely getting more brittle lately. I’ve started hitting the edges with a light pass of WOCA exterior oil or even just some thin CA glue on the end grain right before routing to help stabilize those fibers. Also, try slowing your router speed down and taking two shallower passes instead of one full depth cut. It seems to help keep the chipping to a minimum. If you’re heading to Palm Beach, you’re smart to be cautious; that humidity will expose those weaknesses real fast.

Marcus Webb here. I appreciate the suggestion on slowing down the router speed, Priya. I'll test that approach on some scraps for the next install. Since my Palm Beach project is pending, are you finding that the CA glue technique works well enough to maintain a consistent finish for the boards that will be visible, or does it interfere with the penetration of the final oil stain?
