Best pre-drill bit sizes for Ipe decking?

M

I've been experimenting with different pre-drill bit sizes for Ipe face screwing. Currently using 1/8" pilot holes with #8 stainless screws but wondering if anyone has found a sweet spot that minimizes splitting while maintaining holding power.

What's your go-to setup?

I switched to 9/64" pilots for #8 screws in Ipe and it made a huge difference. Almost zero splitting. The extra 1/64" gives just enough clearance without sacrificing bite. Also make sure you're using a fresh bit — dull bits cause more splitting than anything.

Seconding what Tony said. Also worth investing in cobalt bits instead of standard HSS. They last 3-4x longer in Ipe and the cleaner hole reduces splitting. I buy Norseman cobalt bits in bulk.
