First Ipe project — lessons learned the hard way

Just finished my first Ipe deck (240 sq ft residential). Wanted to share some lessons for anyone else making the jump from PT/composite:

  1. Buy more carbide bits than you think you need. I went through 6 on this project.
  2. End seal EVERY cut immediately. I got lazy on day 2 and now have checking on 3 board ends.
  3. Stainless steel trim head screws are worth the premium over standard stainless.
  4. Your arms will be sore. This stuff is HEAVY.
  5. Budget 2x the time you'd estimate for PT. Pre-drilling adds up fast.

Overall really happy with the result though. Client is thrilled and already referring me to neighbors.
