Hardwood cladding — rainscreen gap question

Doing my first hardwood cladding project. 1x6 Cumaru horizontal rainscreen on the lower level of a modern home. The architect spec'd a 3/4" rainscreen gap, but I've seen recommendations for as little as 3/8". What's the practical minimum for adequate drainage and ventilation behind the cladding? The wall faces west and gets significant rain exposure.
