Garapa graying unevenly on south-facing exposure

Installed a Garapa deck last summer in Sacramento. North half is graying to a nice even silver, but the south-facing half has gone blotchy — dark gray streaks against almost white patches. Client never oiled it (their choice). Is this just UV intensity difference or is something else going on? Would a single cleaning + brightener even it out, or does Garapa just do this?

That's classic UV differential plus splash zones. A sodium percarbonate cleaner followed by oxalic brightener will even it out 90%. Garapa silvers beautifully but it needs a full season of even exposure to get there.

Seen the same in Phoenix. The blotchy areas are usually where sprinkler overspray or shade patterns interrupt the weathering. One clean + brighten in fall and it'll level out.

Hey there, This uneven graying is pretty common with Garapa, especially in high UV areas like Sacramento. The south-facing exposure can accelerate discoloration due to increased sun exposure, causing those blotchy effects. I’d recommend a thorough cleaning with a deck cleaner like Sodium Percarbonate, followed by a brightening treatment to even things out. After that, applying an oil finish (like a good quality teak or Ipe oil) can help protect against future issues and restore a more uniform appearance. Just be patient; it might take a couple of applications to fully even it out. Good luck! Tyler Morrison
