Anyone else noticing inconsistent milling on recent Ipe batches?

Is anyone else dealing with inconsistent milling on 5/4x6 Ipe lately? I just took delivery of 1,200 square feet for a build in coastal South Carolina, and about 15 percent of the boards have a noticeable crown or varying thickness across the width. It’s killing my workflow. I am having to pull out the planer on site just to get the butt joints flush, which is eating up my profit margins. I usually stick with my regular supplier, but they said this is the best current stock available due to supply chain issues. Are you guys seeing this with other species like Cumaru or Garapa, or is it just the Ipe stock currently hitting the East Coast? I’m worried about finishing consistency if I have to over-sand these high spots. Any advice on whether to push back on the supplier or just bake the extra labor into my upcoming quotes?

Tyler Morrison here. I’ve been hitting the same wall with Ipe out of the East Coast ports lately. It’s definitely a quality control nightmare. When I’m stuck with inconsistent thickness, I stop planing on-site and switch to using adjustable joist pedestals or shimming underneath the joists to level individual boards before fastening. It saves the headache of over-sanding and uneven wear patterns. If your supplier is calling this 'best available,' they’re shifting the risk onto you. I’d document every hour of remedial labor and hit them for a partial credit or discount on the next load. Don’t eat that labor cost; it’s on them to deliver mill-spec stock.
